Major Solar Flare and Earth-directed CME on the way

The sun has just produced one of the strongest solar flares of the current solar cycle: an X5-class powerhouse.  The explosion hurled a very fast coronal mass ejection (CME) toward Earth.  This CME could scoop up one or two CMEs already enroute, forming a potent "cannibal CME".  It's arrival today (November 12) could cause severe geomagnetic storms and disrupt power grids, satellite operations, HF radio, etc.  Full story at spaceweather.com.
