The sun has just produced one of the strongest solar flares of the current solar cycle: an X5-class powerhouse. The explosion hurled a very fast coronal mass ejection (CME) toward Earth. This CME could scoop up one or two CMEs already enroute, forming a potent "cannibal CME".
